Maine Coons are the largest breed of domestic cat so that’s going to be a big factor  when picking a cat carrier.

The fact that they keep growing until they’re around 5-years old means they may outgrow a carrier in those first few years.

Maine Coon Cat close up

This can make things difficult especially if you’re traveling regularly by plane as airlines can be strict on carrier sizing for the cabin.

Fortunately, there’s a huge range of large and extra larger carriers available to buy. And don’t forget that you can always shop for dog carriers.

Often carriers are marketed as being for ‘cats’ or ‘dogs’ but really, you’re looking for a pet carrier. The main difference is that cats often prefer smaller carriers to the larger crates that dogs enjoy.

Below, we’ll list some ideas for what we think is the best cat carrier for Maine coons at different prices, styles and designs so you’ll have a good range to choose from or at the very least you’ll leave the website with a better idea of what to look for.

In a hurry?

We’ll add an example of a Maine coon carrier below so you can jump straight into your own research.

^ This carrier is too big to travel with by plane but would be ideal for a large Maine Coon you need to transport by car.

What size are Maine Coons?

According to Mainecoon.org, male cats average around 15-20 pounds and the females are 10-15 pounds. Males have an average height of between 10 and 16 inches and are about 40 inches long with the female being about as long as the male but around 8-14 inches in height.

Your cat may be at the lower or the upper end of these averages.

You’ll need to measure your cat for its carrier and then decide as to whether you want them to grow into it or risk having to replace it in the future.  If you’re Maine Coon is over 5-years old and fully grown, then you can pick out the correct carrier now.

What should you look for when choosing the best cat carrier for Maine coons?

  • You should double check the sizing dimensions and the maximum weight limit before purchasing.
  • Be aware that some soft-sided carriers can dip in the middle and given that most Maine Coons are big, it could be an issue. Choose one with a solid backboard that will support the cat’s weights when you’re traveling.
  • As Maine Coons are heavy cats, you’ll need to factor in the weight not just for the carrier but for yourself.  Are you comfortable carrying them in a traditional hard or soft carrier or would it be better if you used a backpack, a carrier on wheels or even a stroller? We’ll include examples of these below.
  • If you’re traveling with a cat in a plane, then you’ll need to double-check the requirements with the airline.  Most airlines have a specific set of instructions that you’ll need to follow.  (If you’re flying with cats on Delta, we have a post about that). The internet can be a useful resource but always check with the airline directly because information can change quickly, and the last thing you want is to have problems at the airport.
  • Maine Coons are well known for being loving and gentle cats but if you have one that is anxious about getting into a carrier, then you might be better off putting them in a plastic one.  Most soft-sided carriers have mesh panels for ventilation and are not designed for a sustained attack of claws.  That being said, Maine Coons are known for the gentle personalities so a fabric carrier is probably the most suited of all carriers.
  • Depending on how much your cat sheds its fur, you might want to look for one that’s easy to wipe down or which can be washed.  The inner bedding is often what requires a good vacuum or clean and many are machine-washable but it’s always good to check.
  • We always recommend that owners read the verified reviews before buying as it often gives a better picture of the product rather than just a product description.  Many add a photograph, too, which can be really useful in highlighting pros and cons of each product and it’s always reassuring to see other owners praising your favorite choice.

Carrier weighs 8 pounds empty

Carrier sags a bit under a very heavy weight

This carrier is big enough for Maine Coon cats which can be a relief if your cat is still growing.  The metal frame provides a sturdy mode of transportation although, you might benefit from adding a more solid base to the underneath.  This isn’t suitable for plane travel so this is more one for the car.
